6/26/2020 0 Comments My Teacher MissionMy mission as a teacher is to provide students with the learning tools they need to succeed, support them while they explore and discover, and foster a love of learning that will grow as they grow. I have always said that my job as a teacher is to give student everything they need to be successful; that includes physical tools as well as academic & social/emotional skills. I think where we have been lacking as educators in the past, is focusing on the academic skills. The academic skills are important, but I believe that learning cannot happen until a child's social/emotional needs are supported. A student cannot feel comfortable and safe to learn, until they feel comfortable and safe in general. Once that is achieved the growth in academics will come naturally and with positive outcomes. So my mission statement as a teacher comes with the understanding that those "learning tools" I mention include love, compassion, protection, and many other skills that you may not think to be learning tools at first, but are necessary. I teach the whole child, and with that, everything that they bring with them is an important factor to address before the academics happen. I have been teaching, full time, for 7 years, and this is the first time I really thought a mission statement is important and impactful to me. As teachers in the classroom today, we have to have objectives for our students. In the reflective practice for teachers, we should set objectives for ourselves. There is power in a mission statement; a refocus of our profession. Creating mine was inspiring. We can get so bogged down with the politics, and the business, and the chaos of our profession. Amidst the curriculum, we need to step back and remind ourselves of our mission. I believe that when we do that we can be more successful. I urge you to take time to create your mission statement. What is your objective as a teacher, parent, or student? What should you be able to accomplish at the end of the lesson/ day/ year? If you feel so inclined, I would love to hear some of yours, so please share!
